MediWales Annual Innovation Awards and Dinner

Dr Steve Brown of Haemair at the MediWales awards The second MediWales Annual Innovation Awards dinner was held at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiiff on 7th November 2007. The event celebrates the achievements of the life science sector in Wales by awarding five prizes to organisations who have demonstrated excellence in innovation, growth, export, working with the NHS and for the most promising start-up company. This black tie dinner for over 100 MediWales members and invited guests was sponsored by JMJ Laboratories Ltd part of the Synergy Healthcare Group – a leading provider of outsourced services to the healthcare market. While the five prizes were provided by provided by Abel and Imrey, GX Design, PDR, UDL and Cardiff University MEC.

The Innovation Award was won by BBI Holdings for the development of a rapid point of care device for the detection of a specific virulent strain of the Herpes Simplex virus.

The Growth Award was won by DTR Medical for consistent, sustainable and profitable growth. Swansea based DTR manufacture sterile single use surgical equipment.

The Export Achievement Award was won by Dulas Limited who produce solar powered refrigerators for vaccine storage in the developing world.

The Start-up Awards was won by Sleepworks the manufacturer of the new Snorkil anti-snoring device.

The Partnership with the NHS Award was won by Haemair for their work on developing devices that support respiration and ultimately to the development of a prosthetic device that could replace defective human lungs.

An additional Shakerscope from Swansea received a special mention for their development of a range of rechargeable electronic medical devices for use in remote locations.

The medical technology and bioscience sectors (life sciences) in Wales consist of around 250 commercial organisations. Combined they are worth an estimated £1.3bn to the economy and employ around 15,000 people. MediWales represents the interests of this sector through its delivery of events and publications and by providing a voice for the sector. MediWales had 97 members representing leading Industrial and academic organisations. MediWales receives support from the Welsh Assembly Government.
