Haemair awarded grant for treating Lung and Kidney comorbidity

Innovate UK have awarded £219,017 to develop a device to treat the comorbidities of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Swansea company Haemair Ltd lead the project supported by Derbyshire partners Automated Technologies Ltd. Acute Kidney injury arises commonly in ARDS patients; recent studies indicate that over 40% of patients suffering Covid-19 induced ARDS also suffer AKI. In other forms of ARDS (afflicting around 30,000 UK patients annually), the proportion is up to 50%. The mortality rate for patients suffering these comorbidities can be as high as 85%. SMART Cymru Award

SMART Cymru award from the Welsh Government to develop an improved method of maintaining organs for transplant. The average time that a patient waits on a kidney transplant waiting list in the UK is typically 30 months. In the USA, it is over 4 years. These figures are very likely to increase substantially in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, many potential transplant organs are rejected because they appear to be of poor quality. The project aims to develop a device for perfusing donated organs with oxygenated blood to maintain their viability ex-vivo. The Business Life Business Awards 2016 were held at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall on 3rd March 2016 and saw the great and the good of the business world gather to celebrate a year of success. Dr. Steve Brown (holding the framed certificate) and Dr. Richie Phillips from Haemair Ltd, received the Innovation award from rugby legend Jonathan Davies at the glittering ceremony.
